Love Arts Festival Leeds 2012

May 2012.

An opportunity has arisen to get involved in the Love Arts Leeds Festival again this year. It is really early stages but there is a chance of being able to run some workshops with the public. I do not know very much more but Marianne is organising meetings about it in June so that should inform us of whats going on.

I really enjoyed it last year so it would be good to get more involved this year in different ways.

Nexus Art Cafe

May 2012.

Nexus Art Cafe in Manchester is a non profit organisation which invites people from all walks of life and backgrounds to come and join in with creative activities and become a part of the creative community. They put on exhibitions, workshops, events, music, crafts, and more.

I have emailed them about gaining work experience as an Art Intern as I feel they would be really good organisation to be involved in. The mix of work they do with different people is something I am really interested in getting involved in as well as seeing what it takes to run an organisation such as this. I am keen to learn and broaden my knowledge of opportunities.

The opportunity posted on their website...

Zine Workshop

May 2012.

After helping out at the kids zine workshop at Ante Bookfair, I have been asked if I want to go back and help out at Loosely Bound's next event on 5th June. I am really excited that I have been asked to go back. They have also invited me to join their collective. Marianne has said that it is unpaid but they can pay for my travel expenses, and through doing the workshop more opportunities may arise for paid work. Its a good way to get myself out there, network and gain experience in a fun environment.

Ante Bookfair 05/05/12

May 2012.

Through conversations and discussions with Marianne I got the chance to go and help out at the Kids Zine Workshop at Ante Bookfair. I was really nervous as I have never worked with kids in this sort of environment before and I am keen to gain more experience with working with people through creative activities. As I am interested in zine and book making this seemed like a perfect oppurtunity.

The kids seemed to be really engaged with creating stories in the zine format. They has the best imaginations. I feel I engaged with the kids and as the day went on my confidence grew. They seemed to really respond to me and I feel them and myself both got a lot out of the day. I left feeling excited  about the whole experience and would like to do it again!

It was really good to go along as I am beginning to develop understanding and skills in the crossovers between practice and working with different groups of people. There are many opportunities there are out there to work with different people in through creative activities.

Garnets Website

May 2012.

My illustrations of Grizzly Bears have become a feature on the band Garnets website which has just gone live. They really liked them and felt that they were the perfect beginning and end to the website scroll.

This is really exciting because it means my work is being seen in a different context and by people who may not otherwise see it. Garnets have also now asked if I want to create some original artwork for the single and EP releases which I am currently working on.

I feel this is good learning experience, working with a client as their has to be constant dialogue and conversation about developing ideas and work to make sure both parties are happy. I have never worked in this way before so I think its going to be a really beneficial for me, developing my confidence and learning about working to certain requirements in this way. I feel it will help me develop in my future professional pratice.

International Bookfair

March 2012

I went to the International Bookfair and also helped out on the VIS COM stall. It was really fun and interesting, people seemed to really respond to the books on our stall and were asking a lot of questions. We noted down particular books and people who were interested in buying as none of the books were actually for sale. There was loads of handmade zines/prints/book sculptures that were really amazing. I could have looked around forever. It was really encouraging to see how handmade books etc were presented in a professional context and sold.

Loosely Bound

March 2012

I am going to Loosely Bound this weekend. I have found out about some really cool people that are going to be there including Memo, who were at the International Bookfair and Caribou Caravan, who sell art prints/books/zines/jewellery/crafts in a travelling caravan. I have started following both of them on blogs/twitter etc.

Social Media Frenzy

March 2012.

I took the plunge and contradicted everything I have said and got Twitter, something I said I would never have. Family and friends have been telling me for ages about events/opportunities/news that comes from following people on Twitter such as Artists, galleries, collectives etc so I am using it for this purpose and this purpose only. I am trying to get the hang of it, but still don't really understand how to use it, however, I am currently following many of my favourite illustrators/artists and people around Leeds. It does tell you whats going on and is another way to widen knowledge and audience and keep in the know. I hate to admit that, but its true.

I also created a new blog as I feel that this blog is very wordy and is not a good tool for getting my work out there as I use this blog to document my thoughts, feelings and processes throughout projects which is good for me, but not for other people. I felt I needed to create a space I could put my work and keep it clean cut and simple to look at. So I have created a Tumblr. I am not planning on using this to reblog and blog other people's work very much, mainly to put photos, illustrations and my work whatever it may be up there and to follow artists and people I like. I feel it looks more professional and is easier to navigate.

RAG Week Village Fete

March 2012.

I developed illustrations which I then inked onto hand bound books to sell at the RAG Week Village Fete. I spent a lot of time developing the books and making to good quality to sell.

  • A4 Sketchbboks- £3.00
  • A5 Sketchbooks- £1.50/£2.00
  • A6 Sketchbooks/Notebooks- £1.00
  • Grizzly Bear poster- £0.80
  • Postcards- £0.60
  • Notecards- £0.20
  • Grizzly Bear Zine- £0.50

However, on the day of the fete, college was not busy at all and not many people came over to look at any of the stalls. I ended up making about £10 which I gave to charity which means I lost about £8 which I had spent on materials.

I was disappointed with the lack of interest in the whole event but I am glad I took part as I got to experience making for a specific deadline and its the first time I have sold my work on a stall. It is something I am interested doing more out of college as I am developing my work into work to sell in the real world and online. I think taking my work into the public domain would be very beneficial for me to see what response I get.

I need to look more into pricing my work according to how much I spend on materials, time spent making, quality, profit etc. This is something I do not know very much about as of yet.

Hand Painted Type

January 2012.

Matt introduced me to an artist called Marion Deuchars, who produces some really lovely hand drawn type which I really really like. I am getting really into using inks and watercolours to create hand painted lettering and type; experimenting with different sizes, creating shapes and mood within the text.

An illustration of Robert and Susan Erskine, married for 75 years. I hand painted type to go with each illustration I produced for my book about 100 year old people.

I really want to continue exploring hand painted type and how it can be used to emphasise different words and reflect the mood of text  and subject.

Hannah Waldron works with a variety of different mediums such as printmaking, weaving, and ink. I really like her approach to each material and process, it interests me as a big part of my interest and practice lies with combining illustration and making by using different processes and materials.

It is interesting that there is no text within Rain Day and feels appropriate as the illustrations speak for themselves. I like her use of ink, type and colour.

Work Experience

January 2012.

The mentoring through the university has not worked out as I had hoped and I am really struggling as I am doing things I did not expect. I am supposed to be mentoring but so far I have been asked to help out with Maths tutoring and have been placed with a different person each week. My understanding was that I would be mentoring the same children for the whole time and that it would be to offer encouragement, developing confidence with areas that they are struggling with. I am going to go and speak to them at the university.

Vis Com Village Fete 07/12/11

December 2011.

For the VIS COM Village Fete I have teamed up with Emma Fish and Joes Alexis to produce handmade cards to sell. As its nearly Christmas, they will be Christmas cards. I decided to make mine using felt and handstitching. I came up with a few design ideas and cut them out and pinned down to sew. I really enjoy working with materials, and this is the first time I have produced work with the intention to sell. I need to consider my target audience when making and think about how much to sell the cards for, they must not be too much as its mainly students who are going to buy them!

Our stall, ready to go! Joe made the bunting, bright and bold to catch people's eye, and we used bright paper and material to cover the table, then layed sweets around too to entise people!

I really enjoyed the process of making and selling with a specific product and goal. It was interesting working with Emma and Joe as we were producing work with the same basis idea, however our approaches very different. I feel we were successful and worked well together, we raised a lot of money too! A good day and big learning curve.

London Tate

November 2011.

I went to London for the weekend and had my first ever trip to London Tate which was really interesting. There is so much to take in and so many interesting ideas and art works. I felt a bit over whelmed. There was some really thought provoking photographic work of Documentary Photography.

Photography: New Documentary Forms is an exhibition of political photographs, observational photographs everyday life and events from around the world including Iraq, The Congo, Beirut, Ukraine among other places.

Boris Mikhailov photographs Ukraine through the time of Communism and the Soviet Union. Some of the images were shocking and revealing of this complicated time, I found the photographs very interesting as there were many contrasting images within them. For example, the photograph below second from the top on the left of the soldier holding a pink flower. The soldier is a sign of war, conflict, power in his uniform yet he is holding a pink flower and smiling at the camera, seeming soft, a total contrast in the reality of what may be happening seconds after the photo is captured.

One of my favourite illustrators called Sara Fanelli has created this timeline for the Tate which covers a whole floor all over the walls. As soon as I saw it I knew it was by Sara Fanelli as her style is so recognisable.

James Ward

November 2011.

I really like James Ward's style and the element of comedy he brings into the illustrations and the way he combines his illustrations with ceramic and usable objects. I think this works really well, his illustrations are clean, he doesn't over complicate the image and design with too much colour or other detail around the object.
I really want to work with porcelain and also explore ways to create illustration onto ceramics. I would like to hand paint them on, however using slip paints is very unpredictable with how the colour and everything will turn out. I want to try laser-tran and research into other ways to translate my illustrative work onto physical objects.

Jillian Tamaki

November 2011

I think I have fallen in love with this embroidery by Jillian Tamaki. This patchwork quilt is made up of monsters among other things all hand embroidered, it must have taken a very long time indeed! Over summer I began to try my hand at embroidery and I am really getting into it, I find it difficult to make it neat on the on the back of it but I like the image the threads create on both sides. It takes a long time to create an image but I really like the aesthetic it creates to the illustration, they come alive!

These hand embroidered covers took 2 months to complete and are really beautiful, making very interesting and alternative book covers to the normal covers we see.

PPD Tutorial

October 2011

The PPD2 tutorial today really did help and make me feel excited about the areas I am exploring. As I am interested in so many areas as well as teaching, I want to start looking at how the two cross over. My interests lay in making, crafts, ceramics, illustration and photography, I want to see how they cross over and combine with teaching. At this very moment I am not sure I will ever have just one specialism, if I do discover that I have a specialist area I think I will always be interested in other things too.

I began to gain experience with Pyramid Of Arts working with people with high risk disibilities in a movement group at the end of last year. This year I am starting the Visual Arts high risk disability group, I feel I have gained such an insight and broadened my understanding even in the short time I volunteered before summer last year. I am looking forward to starting the group on 31st October.

Another thing I am going to do as part of discovering how art practice and teaching cross over is to volunteer in one of the art workshops in the college, in ceramics, pottery or arts and crafts, working with a range of people with different abilities and skills.

I am also in the process of becoming a mentor in a Secondary school through the University of Leeds. I have has child protection training and mentoring training and I'm currently waiting to hear about my placement. I will be a 1.1 mentor going into the school once every two weeks or once a week. It is up to me to arrange with the school about how many pupils I mentor and how often and when I come in.

I am also going to carry on making my own crafts, ceramics, illustration, photography and combining them to present ideas for work at the village fete. I need to think about other ways to get my work out there and sell? If I find any competition breifs that I feel are relevant for me I'm going to go for it and not be scared!

Finally, continually looking at everything around me; festivals, galleries, events, artists, journals, websites, onlines shops, books, what is happening in my areas of interest? I need to keep myself up to date and informed, talk to people and get in touch with people who are practitioners and teachers; think about different types of teachers and approaches to teaching and learning environments. What are the work placement oppurtunities?

Make You Mark

October 2011.

For the Make You Mark project we have come up with the idea of a travelling postcard project. The idea is that there will be a number of different postcards with prompts on them such as My Favourite Food, My Favourite place in Leeds, Give a piece of advice, which will be the starting point for the person to create a postcard using a number of different materials provided.

We decided it would be good to test out the idea on friends and people we know, so I asked a few people if they wanted to give it a go and set up a mini workshop in my room.

It was really really fun and interesting to see different interpretations to the same prompts. All of the postcards revealing a part of someones personality, memories etc. Everyone really enjoyed it and were really engaged. I feel it was a real success and I'm going to report this back at the next meeting.
